Ms. Mary said, "Kids the nice manager here with a Christmas giving present wants to give each of you a candy cane. We all agree it would be a good time for you to take the plastic off and eat it if you want to.

The kids formed a line from the youngest to the oldest and passed by taking a candy cane from the nice manager. Each orphan knew to say thank you and the manager said, ''Your welcome" twelve times.

Outside the kids were very happy sucking on the sweet tasting peppermint candy. There were smiles on all the faces as most, if not all, had no memory or experience of tasting sugar.

Ms. Mary and her companion walked on down the street with a happy troop of orphans wondering what was coming next. While walking to the next window, the twins noticed the air was colder than they remembered. A wind was blowing and their noses seemed like they were frozen. Ms. Mary stopped in front of a jewelry store that was decorated in Christmas décor. A string of lights bordered the two windows separated by a glass door that had been frosted with fake snow. Tinsel hung off displays accentuating the glistening diamond rings and watches from the bright lights.

The orphans cocked their heads and really did not know what they were looking at. None of kids knew much if anything about real diamonds and how expensive they were. Carol said, "I don't see any prices like in the variety store. I wonder why?"

Ms. Mary heard her and said, "Carol, that's because they are very, very expensive and if you're rich, there's no need to ask the price. I used to have one when I got married. Sadly, I had to sell it to bury my poor husband. We paid over fifty dollars for my wedding ring. Carol saw Ms. Mary reach up and wipe a tear off her cheek.

Ms. Mary said, a little too sharply, "Come on kids let's keep walking before we freeze to death. I hate New York in the winter time. They continued walking with really no place in mind.

However, not far down the street was a J.C. Penny department store. The group stopped and listened to Ms. Mary, "This is a store that sells mostly clothes and such things. There isn't any candy here. We can go in, but no running and don't remove anything from the display shelves.'
